The Atkins Diet is a high-fat, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet like that of the Grapefruit Diet. The Grapefruit Diet may have been a big influence for this diet because it nearly follows the same concepts, restrict all starches and primarily eat meats and fats.

The biggest difference between the Grapefruit Diet and the Atkins Diet is that the Atkins Diet does not require grapefruit to be eaten. The Atkins Diet does not base their diet plan off of the thought that fat would be burned by a specific food being consumed. The differences between the two diets is that the Atkins Diet is a much more thought out diet with specific steps over a long period of time. The Grapefruit Diet did not have any other steps other than what to eat for each meal, but it never changed. The Atkins Diet forces ones diet to change over time so that the body doesn't go into relapse and regain the weight.

With a longer time period, permanent results can take place.
The Atkins Diet, like the Grapefruit Diet, has been suggested to be a hoax. It has been said that the whole reason behind the weight loss of the Atkins Diet has been the lack of calories entering the human body and not the limitation on carbs. Either way, the Atkins Diet is one of the most well-known diets around, and it may have all been because of the Grapefruit Diet.
